Meet the Candidates: Shoreline Fire Commissioner Pos 4: David Harris

David Harris
Shoreline Fire Commissioner Pos 4
I am a lifelong resident of Shoreline, and a residential homebuilder.

I was appointed to the Shoreline Fire Department Board of Commissioners after a competitive recruitment process in early 2010, when the Board was increased from three to five Commissioners. Prior to this, my fire department experience was as a Reserve Volunteer Firefighter for twenty-seven years. From this service time and requisite training, I have gained an overall understanding of fire and emergency medical service operations, and insights into the public expectations for these vital services.

Other community service includes an appointment to the Shoreline Planning Commission by the City Council, and serving two four-year terms, and acting as the Chairman two of those years As a planning commissioner, I worked with staff, other commission members, and the public, solving land use and planning issues, in a collaborative manner.

Over the years, Shoreline Fire Department has provided superior fire and emergency medical services to our district, establishing a tradition of excellence I will strive to maintain. In these difficult times of shrinking revenues, as your Commissioner, I am committed to using all of our resources, creatively and wisely, to maintain a high level of emergency services for our community.

I have no idea who any of the canidates are, but what caught my attention was last year we hired 2 more fire commissioners???? Why? Most of the businesses have been torn down in Shoreline and the Fire Dept has seemed to work for all these years with only 3 comissioners, so what has changed? In this economic down time why is the City expecting us to pay for more government jobs with our already high tax burden?

I think that is a question for the Fire Department since this is their position and their gig. City has nothing to do with it.
