Meet the Candidates: Mayor of Lake Forest Park: Dwight Thompson

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Dwight Thompson, Mayor of Lake Forest Park
OCCUPATION: Small Business Owner; Command Executive Officer - US Army Reserve

EDUCATION: Master of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts - University of Washington

My vision for our city government: chart a course of fiscal responsibility that holds the line on spending while maintaining essential services. You know I’ll do it because I already have: In the last six years I CUT expenses and voted NO to increased taxes.

Even as we tighten our belts, we must safeguard the aspects of Lake Forest Park that we all treasure. I am committed to retaining our locally controlled police department, which ensures the fastest 911 response time in North King County; improving road and park maintenance; and protecting our environment for future generations.

To lead our city through these tough economic times, I will call upon my unique blend of management, community, and leadership experience, including: running a successful small business for 25 years, serving our city as councilmember and serving my country in Afghanistan.

Key Endorsements: Ruth Kagi, Bob Ferguson, Cascade Bicycle Club, Sierra Club

Thompson spins his record again! He was one of the top financial supporters of the Yes on Prop 1 campaign, believing the right solution to the city's financial problems which he helped create was a staggering property tax increase.

You have the right to your own opinion, but not to your own facts. Please do not purposely distort the truth.

The reason Mr. Thompson claims to have voted against raising taxes is that that's exactly what happened. After prop 1 was rejected, the city council still had the option of raising LFP's small portion of your property tax bill by 1%. The council did not exercise that option, and, from what I understand, he's a large part of the reason why they didn't.

And spending. Don't even get me started. He DID oversee cuts - 2 millions dollars worth. What would be an adequate amount of money?

I know Mary Jane would cut the budget to a few stamps and envelopes, but at least Dwight won't outsource the police to King County. We have that to be thankful for.

PLEASE outsource the police. My children have been routinely terrorized and harassed by LFP police with nothing better to do. Their crime: being teenagers in LFP.

Did you know a routine curfew stop of a couple of kids in a car involved two officers calling for backup?
