ShoreDog, the organization which successfully worked with the City of Shoreline to create two off-leash areas for dogs in Shoreline at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park and Shoreview by SCC, has formed a committee to locate a third site in east Shoreline.

The original committee's first choice was Hamlin Park in east Shoreline, but there was such an outcry from neighbors that plans were abandoned in favor of the west side locations.

Leaders in the group say that they now have the experience of successfully creating and maintaining areas, which will help them with the new site search.

They say that "From past experience, this will be a longer-term project and will include activities such as: site evaluation, working with City Staff and Parks Board members, and making presentations to neighborhood associations and to the Parks Board."

They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can commit to this project.
"Please send us an email telling us a little bit about yourself and how you could contribute to this effort."

The Hamlin Park site failed in 2006 because there was no public process and the site selected was in a critical area. ShoreDog, with any input from the public, selected the site with the Parks Department staff without doing any environmental studies, which is why there was negative input from the public.

After this gigantic failure, the city realized the error of its ways and formed a task force, which was supposed to put two pilot projects up - one on the east side and one the west side of Shoreline. However, both of them wound up on the west side of Shoreline and the parks department refused to explain why this happened.

This is typical double-speak on the part of the parks department and placing blame on the public when it is the city staff who failed to involved the public but then blame the public when the demand to be heard.

Correction to the first paragraph, second sentence: "Shoredog, withOUT any input..."
