Shorewood wins District baseball tournament with 18-0 victory over Meadowdale; advances to regional play Saturday in Mount Vernon

Shorewood won the Northwest District 3A baseball tournament with 18-0 victory over Meadowdale at Everett Memorial Stadium Saturday, May 14, in a game ended after five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

The Thunderbirds take a 21-2 record into a four-team regional tournament in Mount Vernon, Saturday, May 21, with the winner and three other regional winners advancing to the State semifinals and finals May 27-29 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Shorewood plays West Seattle, the No. 4 team from the Sea-King District at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dream Field in Mount Vernon, with the other first round game, at 10 a.m., matching Seattle Prep, the No. 2 Sea-King team, and the No. 4 team from the combined West Central and Southwest district tournament, either Auburn Mountainview or Timberline, The two first-round winners meet at 4 p.m.

The winner of the Mount Vernon regional faces the winner of a Centralia regional in Tacoma, with the winners of regional tournaments in Bellevue and Spokane meeting in the other semifinal.

Meadowdale (10-13) and third-place Glacier Peak (10-14) also will represent the District in regional play, Meadowdale against either Camas or Enumclaw in Bellevue and Glacier Peak in Centralia.

Shorewood, Meadowdale and Glacier Peak had been seeded first, fifth and seventh in the eight-team Northwest District tournament after finishing first, fourth and fifth in the eight-team Western Conference 3A division. Eighth-seeded Shorecrest, which lost to Shorewood in the tournament’s opening round Monday, was eliminated when the Scots lost to Ferndale. 8-4. Tuesday.

The Saturday game marked Shorewood’s third victory of the season over Meadowdale, after the T-birds had beaten the Mavericks 3-2 at Meadowdale, May 2, and 13-3 at Shorewood May 4.

“The Thunderbirds flattened Meadowdale 18-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.”
