Date correction: Shoreline City Council meeting Monday, March 7, 7pm

Monday, March 7, 2011

At the Shoreline City Council meeting on Monday, March 7, 7pm in the Council Chambers of Shoreline City Hall, the Council will finish the discussion about the Shoreline Preservation Society's appeal of the Landmark Commission's approval of a Certificate of Appropriateness for construction of the new Shorewood High School as an addition to the century-old Ronald School building.  The agenda says they will make a decision on Monday.

The decision was deferred from last week when the issue arose of whether the Landmark Commission had a legal quorum and therefore the legal ability to make decisions.  The Landmark Commission said they did, but Shoreline City Attorney Ian Sievers was uncertain and wanted more information.

Another item on the agenda is the council approval of a property arrangement which arose during the construction of the 2nd mile of Aurora. It was discovered that a commercial building on Aurora was built four inches into the right-of-way. This is the area where construction crews are constructing a retaining wall. An agreement has been reached with the property owner, which the Council is to review and ratify.

Up for study is the staff recommendation for Shoreline to have its own Animal Control policies. Staff have prepared a 50 page document with proposed regulations. It was designed to be clear and easy to use. It defines "exotic animals" as alligators and snakes and does not seem to include caged animals, which vets usually refer to as "exotics" such as gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, mice. and hamsters. The emphasis is on pets which would interact with the public.

An entire section of the proposed code deals with rabies, which is not found in this area. All dogs and cats would be required to be vaccinated against rabies but it doesn't specify how many times. Most vets do not recommend continuing vaccinations for older animals, and there does not seem to be language about deferring to veterinary advice.

All dogs and cats would be required to be spayed/neutered and dogs would be required to wear tags.  Apparently Shoreline does not legally have a leash law, except in the parks, so that loophole would be closed.

The meetings can be watched live in person, or live on computer. After the meeting, the videos of the meetings are available for viewing on computer

Council meetings are broadcast on cable channels 21 and 37 on Tuesday at noon and 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Sunday at 6:00 a.m., noon and 8:00 p.m.
