Night work starts Tuesday on Aurora - get out your ear plugs

Night work: Major trenching on Aurora - N 192nd north

Construction activity: Digging a deep trench to install storm water and outfall pipe that will connect the new drainage facility (at the SW corner of N 192nd Street and Aurora Avenue N) and Echo Lake.

Where: Crews will trench in the northbound lanes of Aurora Avenue N near the YMCA down to the N 192nd Street intersection. The trench will then head diagonally through the N 192nd Street intersection to the SW corner at the King County Metro Park and Ride (to tie into the future drainage facility at that location). When: This work is expected to begin on Tuesday, March 8 and will take approximately one and a half weeks to complete. Please note this date may shift depending on traffic control coordination.

This work will occur at night: The City of Shoreline carefully considered the special request for a noise ordinance to dig the trench at night, and understands this presents a significant noise impact to nearby residents. The City found it would be impossible to dig a trench during the day without severely affecting traffic on Aurora Avenue. The contractor will begin as early as possible (7:00 p.m.) and will use a variety of tools to minimize noise as much as possible. Traffic on Aurora will be reduced to one lane in each direction at night. The trench will be plated during the day to open all lanes of traffic. Ear plugs will be available for the apartment complexes near this location.

The City of Shoreline’s Aurora Corridor Project is redeveloping the three miles of Aurora Avenue N that run through Shoreline. Improvements include wider sidewalks separated from the roadway by landscaping and other amenities, traffic‐ and pedestrian‐level lighting, and landscaped center medians with left‐ and U‐turn pockets. These improvements continue the community’s vision for Aurora by improving safety, promoting economic development, easing congestion, enhancing environmental quality and adding more pedestrian amenities. The City completed improvements to the first mile, between N 145th and N 165th Streets, in 2007.
