Shorecrest, Shorewood wrestlers win district championships

Five Shorecrest and Shorewood wrestlers reached the finals of the 11-team Northwest District wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at Sedro Woolley High School.

Alejandro Loeza of Shorecrest) won the 189-pound championship and teammate Ian Bolstad won at 285 pounds, with both pinning their final opponents.

Brandon Leach of Shorewood won the 119-pound championship, with teammates Matthew and Kyle Floresca both reaching the finals, with Matthew Floresca losing by injury default in the 112-pound final and Kyle Floresca losing by pin in the 135-pound final.

The finalists and the rest of the top five finishers in each of the 14 weight classes qualify to compete with the top five wrestlers from the Kingco Conference 3A division in the regional tournament Saturday, Feb. 12, at Glacier Peak High School in the Snohomish School District.

Shorewood qualified eight wrestlers for the regional tournament, and Shorecrest qualified four.

Shorewood and Shorecrest finished sixth and eighth in team scoring that was dominated by teams from the northern part of the district, with Mount Vernon, Sedro Woolley, Oak Harbor and Ferndale taking the top four team places.
