Shorecrest boys open district tournament Thursday at home court of Northwest League No. 1 3A team

The Shorecrest boys’ basketball team opens Northwest-District-tournament play Thursday, Feb. 10, at the home court of the No. 1 Northwest League 3A team, probably Mount Vernon, which leads the other two 3A teams in the combined 3A-2A-1A Northwest League.

The Northwest League teams wrap up regular-season play Monday.

The Scots go into the tournament as the No. 4 Wesco 3A team. The Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Wesco teams and No. 1 Northwest League team play first-round games at home.

Shorecrest takes an 8-6 Wesco 3A record (11-9 overall) into the tournament after winning a home game against Everett 58-52 Thursday, a game that kept Everett (4-10 Wesco 3A, 6-14 overall) out of the tournament.

A Shorecrest victory Thursday would advance the Scots to a semifinal game Saturday against the winner of the game between Shorewood and Mountlake Terrace. The losers of the two games meet Saturday in an elimination game.

The tournament continues Feb. 16 and 19, with the top three teams qualifying for the State tournament.

In Shorecrest’s victory over Everett, the Scots took a 25-14 first-quarter lead and held on as Everett outscored the Scots in the second and third quarters. Junior Chibuogwu led Shorecrest with 18 points; Keith Shattuck scored 13; Ryan Canfield added 10; and Keelan Tidwell had 9.

Chibuogwu has averaged 16.9 points for the 18 games he has played. Shattuck has averaged 11.6 points in the Scots’ 20 games.
