Varsity girls score: 56-41
Rebounding by the tallest – and the smallest – added up for a Shorecrest Lady Scots’ 56-41 victory over Everett at the mid-way point of the Wesco girls’ 3A basketball season on Jan. 12.
Led by junior India Matheson’s powerful night with 19 points and 19 rebounds under the boards Wednesday night, the Scots (6-2) set the stage for a Jan. 14 re-match at Glacier Peak (5-2) against a squad that nipped Shorecrest 74-72 in overtime in early December.
Coach Dori Monson is hoping for a rebounding repeat from senior Christina Jarvis, who snagged eight rebounds and added three points to the tally.
“(Jarvis) was the smallest girl on the court during those plays but she was rebounding like a monster,” Monson said after the Everett game.
Junior guard Brianne Lasconia matched those rebounds with eight of her own, 15 points and five steals. Junior post Mickey Greenburg lead the Scots in assists with four, while adding six points and three steals.
Other scoring came from junior Janie Uppinghouse (10 points; three steals; two assists) and junior Allison Jones’ three-pointer to give the Scots a 30-19 halftime lead.
Everett’s powerhouse of triple towers (5-foot-11 sophomore Rosie Sittauer and senior Jesselyn Taggart, and 6-foot senior Emily Liger) controlled the few shots Seagull guards Aliya Davis and Jody Barhanovich missed early in the 3rd quarter, to tie the game 30-30.
But a pair of back-door scoring passes to Matheson and a top-of-the-key jumper by Greenburg put the Scots back on track with a lead they never relinquished. Defensive back-up came from Lady Scots seniors Melissa Ruhlman and Havilah Glesener, and junior Addy Ibsen. Everett falls to 3-5 with the loss.
Now on a three-league-game winning streak after road victories over Mountlake Terrace and Oak Harbor, the 6-2 Scots face league-leading 6-1 Lynnwood at Shorecrest on Tuesday after the Jan. 14 Glacier Peak re-match. Lynnwood’s only Wesco 3A loss this season against Shorecrest in early December.
Lady Scots JV Hoopsters Fall to Everett, 24-53
Shadowed by a line-up that featured a wall of Everett players including a 6-foot-1 freshman, Shorecrest’s JV Lady Scots suffered a 24-53 loss on Jan. 12.
Frosh Onyie Chibuowgwo paced her Shorecrest squad with seven points and four rebounds, with sophomore guard Keegan Monson knocking in six points.
Other highlights: sophomore Amanda Hartley’s six defensive rebounds and sophomore Annie Schlachter’s six steals.
