Get Ready Shoreline - Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service

An event known as the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service is happening Monday, January 17, 2011 in observance of the late Dr. King’s birthday.

This year the City of Shoreline Office of Emergency Management plans a community outreach event called “Get Ready Shoreline.”

City of Shoreline Emergency Management Coordinator Gail Harris says
“We will be targeting residents who live in some of our higher hazard areas of the City with useful information so they can use it to mitigate these hazards and their potential risk. I encourage everyone to take this opportunity now, before a disaster hits to take the necessary steps to minimize your loss.”

Packets of emergency preparedness literature will be distributed to neighborhoods outlined in the City’s Hazard Mitigation Plan as vulnerable to disasters such as landslides, liquefaction, or urban flooding. The Community Services Division and Office of Emergency Management hopes to inform the public about emergency preparedness and the Map Your Neighborhood programs by distribution of these materials by volunteers going door to door.

Volunteers are from the AmeriCorps VISTA program, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington, Shoreline Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members, and members from the local amateur radio team –Auxiliary Communications Services (ACS) will be distributing authorized materials and will not be soliciting services or donations from residents.

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national program started by John F. Kennedy in 1961 and members serve one year of community service while performing in a specific job function. One of the key VISTA principles is to serve impoverished communities.
