Shorewood seniors Hopen and Stenfjord expected to lead Thunderbirds in run for another State swimming championship

Thursday, December 2, 2010

When the Shorewood boys’ swimming and diving team opens its season Thursday at the Shoreline Pool with a meet against Lynnwood and Meadowdale at 3:30 pm, senior co-captains Mackey Hopen and Thor Stenfjord are expected to lead the team as it begins a quest for another state championship.

In February, the two were on a team that won the State 4A 200-yard medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Stenfjord won the State 4A 100-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200 individual medley as the T-birds won the 4A State team championship.

Hopen had a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and finished third in the 50 freestyle at last year’s 4A State meet.

Junior Eddie Young won last year’s State 4A 1-meter springboard diving competition.

This year, with Shorewood having dropped to the 3A classification, the Everett Herald recently named Stenfjord one of five Western Conference 4A and 3A and Cascade Conference 2A swimmers to watch.
