Our NewsPartner, The Seattle Times, published a book review of River House by Sarahlee Lawrence. Sarahlee will be at Third Place Books at 6:30 pm on Saturday, December 11, reading and signing copies of her book.
Third Place Books has author events several times a week. See our previous story or check the Third Place Books website.
River guide Sarahlee Lawrence rode waterways from East Africa to Argentina, but her biggest adventure was building a log house with her father during a long, bitter winter in the Oregon desert.
While on her travels, Lawrence comes to the realization that what she most desires is to settle on her family's 80-acre ranch in the high desert of central Oregon. At the heart of "River House" (Tin House Books, 272 pp., $16.95) is Lawrence's determination to build a log house of her own with her adored father over a long, bitter winter.
Tough, can-do Lawrence mixes concrete for the foundation and wields a 22-pound chain saw, all the while caring for 40 horses and delivering hay to neighboring farms for extra cash. After collecting rocks with her mom on nearby flats for a woodstove mantel, she gets to work: "I had no masonry experience, but I bought my mortar and grout and set to it."
