Foreclosures in Shoreline, as seen on Google Maps
Saturday, December 11, 2010
This might be tough to read this close to the holidays, but it's a reality that we should all be aware of, as it could involve our friends, family and neighbors.
Google Maps has recently upgraded their ability to show real estate listings split into various categories, including foreclosures.
To see homes in foreclosure in your area,
- visit Google Maps (which will open in a new window or tab)
- enter an address, and note the "More" button near the top right, between "Traffic" and "Map."
- Under "More" you will see an option for "Real Estate."
- Click on that, then looking at the left of the screen, you will see the listing types "For rent," "For sale," and "Foreclosure."
- Check the "Foreclosure" box, and you can then navigate around the area and homes in foreclosure, represented by red dots on the map, which will update as you scroll or zoom.
And the data is dismaying. Here is a screen capture of the foreclosed homes in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, from an eagle's eye view.
There appear to be hundreds of homes in foreclosure in this area, and it wasn't even as hard hit as some parts of the US. It's a shocking and graphic insight into how difficult things are in this economy for so many people.

Gee whiz, I think the No on Prop One campaign referred to this map and data, but you just woke up to it?
Better late than never I suppose. After all, we have to keep on paying for our brand new city hall with the empty space and absolutely cannot lay off any city staff -- who bought the property tax levy with their proxy, Support Shoreline PAC.
Thank you Sonya for posting this fascinating map and article. It is very sobering. You see the forclosure and For Sale signs all over town, but you don't get the total picture that way.
Very sobering for sure. We re right in the middle of this recession still.
It tough and I feel sorry for those who are losing their homes. I do wish, however, that I had extra cash that I could put into buying investment properties.
Whats really sad is, there are more houses in foreclosure than listed on this map, my parent's house is one of them and it's not indicated as such on google.
For a detailed list of foreclosures, go to realtytrac.com & search for Shoreline, WA
There are 402 active listings and 100 recently sold properties - something that I mentioned during the proposition one property tax increase that the city staff said would be no burden on home owners; of course, said city staff by and large don't live in Shoreline.
I think you forgot to uncheck "for sale" not all of these are foreclosures.
