Letter to the Editor: an inquiry to Art Coday

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

To the Editor:

Here is my inquiry to Art Coday – who is supposing that he is worthy of Democratic and Independent supporters.

Art, I am a fiscally conservative independent voter in the 32nd. I received your literature today.

1. Increase public safety. Wonderful idea. How are you going to pay for it??

2. Good Steward of Wildlife, etc. What will you do that is not being done?? How are you going to pay for it??

3. Governmental terrorism/theft - Currently the WA State government invades and attacks peaceful citizens for the choices they make of what plants, etc. to put into their bodies. The WA legislative and executive branches steal the rest of our money to attack these peaceful citizens because of ingesting "socially unacceptable" leaves and flowers. This is not only horribly wasteful it is a purely fascist intrusion into the privacy of individual citizens and destroys the very citizen/government relationship.

Will you specifically work to overturn the laws prohibiting the cultivation and use of hemp?? Will you honestly consider what other laws re: "controlled" substances could be reduced or eliminated to end the severe damage to so many people and their families due to direct governmental violence and horrific waste of all of our money??

Your answer will tell me whether you are a true conservative - or simply a big government fascist dressed in sheep's clothing.

Best wishes in the campaign.

Interesting questions, but I wonder why you only want Dr. Coday's opinion? I'd like to hear from all the candidates...for all offices...on these questions.

1. How will you pay for the things you are promising?

2. Are you in favor of legalizing pot?

I'm guessing the answers from ALL the candidates will be very, very similar on all of these questions...once they get done beating around the bush.

They are going to use our tax money...

...and they aren't going to legalize recreational pot.

This, basically, is how all the candidates will answer those question. Really, the only candidates that need to answer this are the ones who's answers do NOT boil down to that.

Is there ANY candidate running ANYWHERE this year that will come out in favor of legalizing recreational drug use?

Regulating drugs isn't 'fascist'. That's a normal function of virtually every government on earth.

Fascism is government control and monopolization of an entire industry...like, say, the state controlling all liquor sales for a profit.

Please don't throw around terms like that recklessly.

Absolutely agree with Anon#1 above. Marijuana should be legalized and taxed; experts agree that it's safer than alcohol, and would contribute immensely to a state's budget. I do also agree with Anon#2; we need to end government control of liquor sales.

However, I would not trust the very Republican Dr. Coday to back either of these causes.

I know a couple of people who smoke pot / or ingest it. One has a medical card for it. This is what I observed from people who smoke pot. IT MAKES THEM STUPID & LAZY! I suppose that's where the term "pot head" came from.

Anon @ 8:34; I know a lot of people who smoke pot. And yes, some are lazy and stupid. I also know a lot of people who drink alcohol. Some of them are also lazy and stupid (perhaps that's where the term "drunken idiot" came from).

On the other hand, most of the pot smokers I know, myself included, are employed, home-owning, happily married or partnered, responsible adults. Could it be that with your attitude, the people you know who *are* responsible marijuana consumers aren't too keen to mention it to you? Perhaps your statistical sample isn't 100% accurate.

I have a very unhealthy, rude, stupid, lazy, drinking neighbor, and very healthy, thoughtful, intelligent, hard working pot smoking neighbors. I don't know about you all, but I don't think pot is a problem.

I do think that dumping tax money towards fighting against anything having to do with any substances for one's own personal use is totally unreasonable. And is one step towards fascism.

Let's face it, a gulag is essential for fascism. A prison where substance users, and very small time sellers, are sent to work for no pay in order to make profits for corporations (who run the current US government) sounds equivalent to a gulag.

First, I want to thank my local Shoreline readers for responding - I am glad that there is interest in the subject and that my letter sparked a response (and, hey, Diane, there ARE people reading the paper....).

Agree that this same questions could be posed to anyone. However, I was writing specifically regarding the campaign lit sent by Art - and the sort of pie in the sky talking point promises he was making. I need a little realism. Likewise, being involved in judicial reform, I wanted to do a bit of a gut check while I was at. Still have not heard from Art though a rep said he would get back to me. Somehow I am anticipating hearing the same old "I luv big nanny government who wastes taxpayers money" song and dance that I always get from Republicans (NOTE: I am not a Dem - I just know what Repubs are really all about).

Anon 2

Disagree with your limited use of fascism - a government does not have to perfectly fascist in order to be engaged in fascist activities any more than they have to be perfectly socialist or whatever to be a engaged in socialist activities. My use of the term is fine.

Second, the government has NO right to prohibit the plants that God have mankind to use (check your Bible it is Gen1:29). It is NOT the normal function of government to prohibit therapeutic substances that people choose to use for their well being - governments have usurped citizen responsibility and you have bought a lie. Regulation for the benefit of the citizens of certain substances (like say your nutrional substances...) would be great because we would have a third party audit of the purity, etc. But that is it my friend. (Unless you are a fascist at heart...:-)

Sincerely,
Greg

Some stupid and lazy people smoke pot. Other stupid and lazy people don't smoke pot. Stupid and lazy people also drive cars, marry, breathe air, eat, live and die.

Stupid and lazy people make stupid lazy arguments using stupid and lazy thinking they learned from other stupid and lazy people.

Other than the stupid and lazy people reading this, I think you get the point.

Best,
Greg
