Evan Smith: Kagi, Gagliardi on choosing a legislator

I've asked candidates what qualities voters should look for in choosing legislators.

Here are answers from 32nd District Democratic incumbent Rep. Ruth Kagi and Republican challenger Gary Gagliardi.

Kagi:
“The candidate's demonstrated commitment to the community's values. Through years of involvement with the PTA, Center for Human Services, League of Women Voters and other local organizations, I understand and strive to represent the values of this community.
“Second, the candidate's ability to effectively represent the community in the Legislature and get things done. My record of accomplishment is extensive (see my website, ruthkagi.org). Most important, I have the experience and knowledge to make unavoidable budget cuts thoughtfully and carefully.”

Gagliardi:
“Pick legislators that represent you and your community's interests, not those of government officials and special interests in Olympia. Seventy percent of our legislators have never made a living in the private sector. Pick a representative who has looked for work, worked in different industries, collected unemployment, hired employees, built organizations and understands the effects of legislation on job markets. Pick a representative with experience in moving control and money out bloated bureaucracies to create more reliable, accountable and responsive organizations.”
