Garth Stein with Shelby Foote at Shorewood One Acts |
A writers' group known as the Seattle 7 have organized a unique fund-raiser for the WITS. program which they all support - the Writers In The Schools. The Novel Live! event was organized by Shorewood graduate Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain.
36 authors will participate in the creation of one novel in six days, October 10-16. The event will be streamed live.
According to the Seattle Times,
"Beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 11, each author will sit down for a two-hour stretch and compose. It will be like the game of hot potato — after two hours one author will get up and hand off whatever they've written to the next. On the last day, romance writer Susan Wiggs will end the novel, increasing the likelihood of a happy ending. Fans can donate through the website — donor recipients will include Writers in the Schools and 826 Seattle, a writing center for young people — or at tip jars at the event. Of course, there will be a T-shirt."
Stein, whose mother still lives in Shoreline, has been very involved in Shoreline Schools and local institutions. Aside from the WITS program, he worked with Shoreline drama students during this year's One Act Play Festival and hosted the Friends of the Community fund-raising breakfast in LFP in March.
