Five Shoreline students honored as 2009-10 Writers In The Schools

Five students from Room Nine Community School have been selected for publication in the 2009-10 Writers in the Schools (WITS) best-of anthology.

The students are Emily Barry, Cymbeline Burgess, Matthew Edwards, Nico Herbert, and one more student who has requested to be published anonymously.

To celebrate the publication of this year's anthology, You Will Not Come Back Unchanged--a title that came from a line in Emily's poem—Writers in the Schools is hosting a book launch and signing at 7 pm on September 22 in the Plestcheeff Auditorium at the Seattle Art Museum. All published students are invited to read their work.  The event is free and open to the public.

Each student will receive two complimentary copies of the anthology, and Room Nine will receive a classroom set. Additional copies will be available for a suggested donation of $10.

Writers in the Schools (WITS) matches a local creative writer with a public elementary, middle or high school to design innovative and culturally relevant lesson plans that meet the goals of the participating classes while engaging students. The program invigorates both students and teachers with fresh ideas and encouragement. Teachers report students' quality of writing improves, and they become more confident in expressing themselves.

Students from twenty-one schools in the greater Seattle area are represented in the anthology.
