County Council celebrates Shoreline’s 15th Anniversary of Incorporation

The Metropolitan King County Council recognized the 15th anniversary of the incorporation of the city of Shoreline today. Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan, along with Shoreline City Councilmembers Chris Eggen and Shari Winstead received the recognition, presented by Council Chair Bob Ferguson.

“Shoreline’s citizens and officials have worked hard to develop the city’s reputation for strong neighborhoods, excellent schools, and abundant parks,” said Council Chair Bob Ferguson, who represents Shoreline on the County Council. “It is not surprising that Shoreline is receiving national attention for being a great place to live.”

Shoreline has been locally and nationally recognized as a great place to live, most recently as one of only two Washington cities in Money Magazine’s “2010 Best Places to Live” list.

“I am proud to be serving as Shoreline’s Mayor as it celebrates its 15th anniversary of becoming a city,” said Mayor McGlashan. “We look forward to developing the relationship between Shoreline and King County, and thank the County Council for this recognition.”

In 1944, the local school district adopted the name “Shoreline” to describe its community, nestled “shore-to-shore” between Puget Sound and Lake Washington and “line-to-line” from the northern city and county boundaries. Citizens organized to form the City of Shoreline, which was incorporated on August 31, 1995.

Today, Shoreline is a dynamic and diverse community of over 54,000 residents, making it the 15th largest city in the state and the 7th largest in King County. In the years since its incorporation, Shoreline has invested significantly in civic improvement projects, including the award-winning Aurora Corridor Project, the expansion and improvement of its park system through a city parks bond, and the development of a new city hall and civic center.

“I am delighted the County Council took the time to acknowledge this important milestone in our city’s history,” said Councilmember Chris Eggen. “Shoreline is a unique community and a wonderful place to live.”

“Shoreline is a great place to live and I am thrilled to be able to call it home. As someone who used to work at the County Council, I appreciate the Council’s recognition of Shoreline’s accomplishments over the last 15 years,” said Councilmember Shari Winstead. “Partnering with the county to help make the city’s dollars go further, as we did with Cromwell Park, is critical to providing important services to our citizens.”
