Shoreline Firefighters were called to an unoccupied residence near 170th Place and Dayton Avenue North at about 12:30 today after a man reported that he left a hazardous material in the garage of the home.
When fire crews arrived, four workers repairing the home were in the area – as was the unidentified male who originally called 9-1-1. The five men were isolated as a precaution, and evaluated for any possible symptoms of exposure.
Because the man was vague about what substance he left in the garage, or when and why he did it, Shoreline Fire requested the assistance of the Seattle Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team.
Police closed off access to the area for about two hours while the incident was ongoing.
Seattle Fire quickly determined the material to be a potentially hazardous chemical. However, no one suffered any symptoms of exposure. HazMat experts advised the property owner to hire a professional cleanup firm to handle the removal of the substance.
Police are investigating the incident, and looking into the motives of the man who reported the incident.

[Editor's note: I was southbound on I-5 mid-day and passed at least eight Seattle Fire Department vehicles - medic units, fire engines, and others, all headed north on I-5 with lights flashing. No sirens, and they were going freeway speed, but it was quite a procession.]
